https://revistas.rcaap.pt/sociologiapp/article/view/14197
The paper investigates police perceptions of protesters. Based on group discussions with riot police and interviews with high ranking officers, six domains are analysed as dimensions of a risk constellation contributing to the emergence of an enemy image of the protester. The findings suggest that labels describing the “police counterpart” often express distance and opposition (1) and depoliticise demonstrations (2). Furthermore, formal (3) and informal (4) categorisations of protesters as well as the perception of indications of threat in policing practice (5) are examined. Bipolar patterns of classification of protesters were found to be influential. Classifications are partly based in the law and partly in particularistic and normative subcultural attributions of legitimacy which police transfer into their organisational interpretive schemata distinguishing between legality/illegality. For explanatory means the study utilises perspectives of organisational sociology as well as the cultural distance between the police and the protesters (6). This is further elaborated using the social figure of the “normal citizen”, in which specific police conceptions of normality are condensed and which serves as a threshold for the perception of deviant protesters. Besides the implications for theory of democracy of the analysed clichés and enemy images the findings conclusively suggest that the distanced to hostile relationship between the police and some protesters does not merely represent a pedagogical or “practical” problem of the police, but is the expression of a certain conflict structure. In this structure organisational and individual factors on the side of the police as well as their actual conflict experience at demonstrations converge.
Peter Ullrich Copyright (c) 2019 Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas 2019-10-16 2019-10-16 92 10.7458/SPP20209214197 Spacegoat, sacrificial exchange, violence and corporality https://revistas.rcaap.pt/sociologiapp/article/view/14668
This article develops a reflection on the relationship among between cult, celebration, and sacrificial substitution in the foundation of human time-space. For this purpose, the author resorts to D. H. Lawrence´s novel The Plumed Serpent, where a bullfight is depicted. For reading this fragment of the novel, the argument articulating the text has as an finds expository support in René Girad´s concept of the scapegoat, the concept of fetishism developed by Auguste Comte, and Michel Serres´ analysis on the of sacrificial exchange which supports the whole totality of human social practice.
Hilderman Cardona Rodas Copyright (c) 2019 Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas 2019-10-16 2019-10-16 92 10.7458/SPP20209214668 Bullfighting, violence and development: opinions and evidence https://revistas.rcaap.pt/sociologiapp/article/view/12672
The argument that the participation or attendance of children in bullfights (considered as an anachronistic practice, reminiscent of the past unworthy of modern societies) impairs their psychological development and encourages violent behaviour, is being disseminated in recent years. Some international bodies have also issued similar opinions. The present article intends, in a modest way and without controversy around the subject, to test the bases of empirical sustentation of such argument. For this purpose, has been constructed a “bullfighting activity index” that shows the intensity of the presence of bullfighting in each county of Portugal. This index has been correlated with the purchasing power index (approximation to the level of development of the county) and the crime rate (approximation to the putative psychological effects of bullfighting). It was found that there is no significant correlation between attendance or participation in bullfighting activities, on one hand, and levels of development and crime, including violent crime on the other hand.
Luís Capucha Luís Pereira Tiago Tavares Copyright (c) 2018 Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas 2019-10-16 2019-10-16 92 10.7458/SPP20209212672 Emotive culture and moral order: fear and risk in the new contemporary sensibility https://revistas.rcaap.pt/sociologiapp/article/view/13614
The issue developed in this paper is that fear is a social emotion and a social construction of meanings. It starts from the hypothesis that fear is a forged emotion in social relations. This paper aims to understand the basis of the social construction of fear in the common man’s imagination, as a game of maintenance, conformation and transformation of social and individual essays, as networks of conflict, which inform and formulate emotional cultures and moral processes. The paper analyzes the relationships between individuals or groups, perceived as intertwined in the direct or indirect presence of fear.
Mauro Guilherme Pinheiro Koury Copyright (c) 2018 Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas 2019-10-16 2019-10-16 92 10.7458/SPP20209213614 “120 out of 60”: practices and attitudes of workers towards animals in a Portuguese slaughterhouse https://revistas.rcaap.pt/sociologiapp/article/view/18139
This study aims to understand the practices and attitudes of workers that deal with animals in a slaughterhouse. For this purpose, it was used photographic documentation during the “routing”, “stunning”, “hanging” and “bleeding” of animals in the slaughter line; also the method of qualitative analysis that required interviewing to eight individuals: two women and six men. Although workers recognize animals as sentient beings, the operationalization of their tasks in the slaughter line is dependent on strategies that require objectification and emotional distancing. Conflicting attitudes related to certain species of animals were also evidenced. Labor context (slaughterhouse), time spent, the performed tasks, animal species, particularly gender and socio-cultural trajectories of workers stood out as predominant factors that influenced their practices and attitudes.
Rui Pedro Fonseca Copyright (c) 2019 Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas 2019-10-16 2019-10-16 92 10.7458/SPP20209218139 Sociopolitical values, attitudes and behaviors of Portuguese economics students https://revistas.rcaap.pt/sociologiapp/article/view/13699
Previous research on the Portuguese case confirmed free-riding, free-marketer and right-wing political inclinations among economics students. Further scrutiny was endeavored here, perceiving also a considerably increased interest for politics, notwithstanding the lack of concern for public problems. Various aspects of free-riding proclivity were distinguished and discussed, relating them with youngsters’ risk-loving and sensation-seeking tendencies, but also with a number of other facets specific to economics students, including: prevalence of achievement values, contextual influences on morals, peer pressure, perceived group status and social expectations regarding the economic profession.
João Carlos Graça Jorge Caiado Rita Gomes Correia Copyright (c) 2018 Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas 2019-10-16 2019-10-16 92 10.7458/SPP20209213699 Public policy implementation studies: a literature review https://revistas.rcaap.pt/sociologiapp/article/view/11728
The goal of this paper is to present a critical literature review about Policy Implementation Studies, so to contribute to the development of this discipline in Portugal. The relevance of this analysis derives from implementation still being scarcely studied in the country, particularly with a procedural approach, even if being frequently identified as one of the main lacuna within national public governance. The paper starts with an analysis on the main contributes from the different generations of implementation studies and from its recent developments, and it concludes with a set of clues on how to develop research in this discipline.
Luis F.
