Challenges in research on conflict resolution in Southern Africa

Researching conflicts on the African continent is a complex undertaking, characterised by methodological, ethical and political constraints that present challenges to scholars. Drawing on experiences gained during fieldwork in three southern African countries, this article critically describes and analyses the challenges encountered in data collection, particularly in interviews with national and regional actors involved in conflict resolution in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola’s role in pacifying this country. The discussion focuses on qualitative strategies and tools used to address and overcome the challenges of conducting.
