Abstract

Introduction: After a period of hospitalization in a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit, the person may maintain the limitations resulting from the event that led to their hospitalization. This document aims to report the experience in implementing a project for continuous improvement of the quality of nursing care – Cuidando Project – aimed at training the caregiver of the hospitalized person with a focus on promoting their autonomy.

Methodology: Descriptive and retrospective experience report of the continuous improvement project for the quality of nursing care called “Cuidando”.

Results: The results regarding the number of hospitalized persons who met the inclusion criteria for the project, the teaching and training provided and the respective gains in training and satisfaction of caregivers with the unit nurses' intervention were analyzed. 65% of the hospitalized persons between January and June 2024 took part in the project. The themes on which the most teaching sessions were held were “fall prevention and safety”, “gait training”, “low molecular weight heparin administration” and “therapeutic regimen management”. In 75% of the topics on which teaching and training sessions were held, 100% of the sample of caregivers were trained.

Conclusion: Based on the training results obtained by caregivers, the Cuidando Project is capable of offering value in responding to the needs of caregivers of the hospitalized persons, facilitating a safe transition home after the period of hospitalization.
