About the Journal
Scope and editorial policy
Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas (Sociology, Problems and Practices) is a scientific journal whose main purpose is to publish original sociological research articles, theoretical elaboration, or thematic review. It is also open to interdisciplinary contributions from other social sciences.
It is a diamond open-access journal (Diamond OA), with no costs for readers or authors. Belongs to the international scientific publishing space. The journal publishes articles in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French, by authors from various countries. It is indexed in several international bibliographic and bibliometric databases.
The journal's editorial policy is guided by principles of scientific quality, social relevance, and academic pluralism. Seeks to ensure that the articles published make effective contributions to the advancement of knowledge.
The articles submitted to the journal are subject to independent peer-review by at least two recognised experts in the topics covered by the articles, under a double-blind review process.
The journal Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas was founded in 1986 by the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte) of Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon, and has been published continuously since then. From 2012 onwards, it began to be published online, in open access, although a printed version is also available.
Continuous publication and periodicity
The journal Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas adopts a continuous publication model. Articles are published immediately after peer review, approval, and editing, without waiting for the publication of a complete issue, which allows for faster communication and dissemination of knowledge.
In addition, the journal also continues to publish three complete issues per year, integrating all articles published continuously throughout that period.
Publication languages
The journal publishes articles in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French. Abstracts of each article are published in these four languages, regardless of the language used in the main text.
Peer review
Articles submitted to Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas are subject to peer review.
Each text is preliminarily analysed by the Editorial Board to verify whether it generally fits the scientific profile and editorial orientation of the journal. At this preliminary stage, the article is also subject to specialised plagiarism detection software.
Articles which pass these preliminary checks are then submitted for independent peer review by at least two recognised experts in the subject areas covered by the articles, under a double blind review system. This evaluation may result in one of three outcomes: (i) approval of the article; (ii) reformulation of the article; (iii) rejection of the article.
The final publication decision is the director's responsibility, after consulting the Editorial Board.
