The article is based on the meaning of the choices that these female caregivers make in connection with the children and adolescents who are welcomed in homelike settings. Through qualitative research, it analyzes the motivations reported by them to enter this institutionalized care, such as: income, reconciliation between work and motherhood, care of their children and love for children and adolescents in situations of abandonment. Despite being a public policy, this activity is based on the continuity between being a woman and knowing how to care. Thus, the meanings of a public policy as formerly advocated are shifted to a practice that is based on the ideals of love and motherhood.
