Abstract

Portugal is mainly a Catholic country and with significant indicators of religiosity in the European context. However, this fact did not prevent the emergence of a set of more liberal attitudes in society such as the legalization of same-sex marriage. This article aims to examine the reactions of the Catholic Church on this ethical challenge, taking into account the interactions developed with the political system and within the Catholic world (hierarchy, Catholics in general, groups and organizations), both marked by homogeneity and diversity and by dynamics of solidarity and conflict.
