------
Anthropology distances itself from history when it adopts the participant observation as a foundation of ethnographic authority. Based on this understanding and on the methodological issues surrounding the research on the brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos de Quixeramobim, existing in the colonial period in Brazil, we bring into discussion the possibilities opened for the ethnographic text, when alternative research sources are adopted to describe a particular social setting, such as archives and oral memory. Our intention is to develop some thoughts around the ethnography of the brotherhood in question, based on these sources, which we have entitled as “retrospective”.
