Abstract

Focusing upon the construction process of an «imagined Portuguese community», we aim to understand and analyse the identity processes and strategies mobilised by the members of a Portuguese immigrant association in Paris, France. The «imagined Portuguese community», expressed through participation in the «rancho», primarily functions as a spacefor the production of identity. The migrant identities of our informants are thus defined in a neither-here-nor-there space, an «imagined Portugal», where the most significant value is intergenerational sacrifice.
