In fifty years, the environs of Lisbon became urbanized. Small suburban nuclei, associated with industry, residence and vilegiatura gave way to vast corridors of expansion and metropolitan consolidation where a plurality of forms of occupation, circulation and usage are observed today. By analyzing the transformation of population concentration patterns in the Lisbon agglomeration, this article shows how in the second half of the 20th century a settlement structure emerged and consolidated, which contributed a great deal to the morphogenesis of the Lisbon metropolis.
