Abstract

This study proposes reflections on the different variables that influence the categorization of a situation as within or beyond the jurisdiction of the Special Center for the Defense of Women’s Rights and Victims of Gender Violence (Nudem) of the Public Defender’s Office of Rio de Janeiro (DPRJ), where I conducted ethnographic fieldwork between August and December 2022. The term “current/recent gender violence” is used by legal advisors to characterize cases that can be handled by the center. The categories of “violence”, “gender”, and “current” are contextual and reflect different moral perceptions held by those responsible for providing assistance. Based on the description of specific cases and research on classificatory dynamics within the justice system, constructed through relational and evaluative categories, I analyze the impact of the expression “current/recent gender violence” on ensuring the rights of women who seek assistance from Nudem. In addition, I discuss the factors that enable the
accommodation of claims initially deemed beyond the institution’s jurisdiction.
