Abstract

The article comments on, contextualizes and transcribes the epistolary exchange between social anthropologist David J. Webster (1945-1989) and ethnologist and Portuguese colonial official António Rita-Ferreira (1922-2014) between 1971 and 1979. Webster, an ethnographer of the Chopes of Inhambane, maintained a relationship of friendship and intellectual exchange with Rita-Ferreira throughout the 1970s. The epistolary shows that, beyond the inevitable political differences, there was a relationship of camaraderie between the two, sustained by a shared anthropological curiosity.
