“Per un Pirineu viu”: modelos de desarrollo y propuestas contrahegemónicas en lucha por el futuro del territorio

Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the scenario of emerging socio-political conflict in the Catalan Pyrenees and the dispute that has been waged in recent years over development models. Since the 1970s, a hegemonic discourse of development of peripheral areas has been imposed, in which the option towards tourism and the tertiarization of the economy seemed to be the only valid formulas to counteract a reality of secular isolation and depopulation. In the last ten years, we observed the emergence and consolidation of political and ideological alternatives that will converge in the concretion of a citizen platform of opposition to the project of the regional government to hold a Winter Olympic Games in the region, reaching great repercussion in the Catalan media. The analysis of these phenomena and the crystallization of a discourse that for the first time discusses a model based on “tourism monoculture” will allow us to explore the critiques of the institutional development models, as well as to think about the fractures and dissidence that operate in the projection of alternative futures.
