Food is one of the sectors of the economy that best expresses the contradictions between the hegemonic socioeconomic system and contemporary ecological knowledge. In opposition to industrial agriculture, we have witnessed the emergence of several initiatives that embrace agroecology as a fundamental principle. Drawing from two case studies - Rizoma cooperative and Maravilha CSA - this article explores the implications, potentialities, and limitations of placing ecological principles at the center of economic activity in a context of capitalist hegemony. The central argument is that economic democratization is essential for developing truly sustainable food systems.
