Guinea-Bissau is located in the Gulf of Guinea, a region that has been affected by various maritime security threats throughout this century. Piracy, illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing are among the most significant. This article addresses the issues related to how Guinea-Bissau responds to current challenges. To this end, it analyzes the main threats, the capacity of Guinean security bureaucracies with responsibilities in the maritime domain, identifies gaps, and envisions actions that could contribute to their mitigation. Using a qualitative research strategy, inductive reasoning, and a case study research design, a mapping of the main structures framing Guinea-Bissau’s actions in the maritime domain was carried out. It was concluded that there are significant weaknesses that prevent an adequate response to the threats developing in that domain.
