Abstract

Bee products are widely consumed worldwide, in particular honey. At present, other products such as propolis, royal jelly, pollen and bee venom become highly interesting because of their biological properties such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti inflammatory activity. Consumer knowledge of these properties can contribute to value them and to promote the use.

This study aims to evaluate the consumption of bee products in Portugal and to assess the level of knowledge and attitudes of consumers towards the products of the hive, in view of the opportunities of market growth.

An online questionnaire was developed and implemented, and data from 307 portuguese individuals was collected. A descriptive analysis for the sample characterization and on the consumption habits was accomplished.

Most respondents consume honey (86%) throughout the year and with a preference for Portuguese honey. Honey is often purchased directly from the producer, and at the time of purchase, consumers appreciate quality, type and flavour. For other bee products, the consumption level and the knowledge of their therapeutic properties and applications is generally reduced.
