A Rehabilitation Nurse’s intervention in the family caregiver burden of the elderly with dementia

Introduction: The increase of aged population leads to an increase in chronic diseases, such as dementia, which is reflected in the decrease in the ability to carry out activities of daily living. Consequently, it makes the person dependent on a caregiver. It is mostly family members who assume the role of caregiver and situations of burden may arise, as they are not trained or qualified to perform the function. Nurses have the role of helping family caregivers and empowering them to respond in a healthy way to the changes inherent in exercising the role of caregiver.
Objective: To map the scientific evidence on the Rehabilitation Nurse´s intervention in the family caregiver burden of the elderly with dementia.
Methods: Implementation of a scoping review protocol, based on the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The research was conducted in SCOPUS®, Web of Science™ and EBSCO®, and was also, in the gray literature: Repositórios Científicos de Acesso Aberto de Portugal, Google Scholar and MedNar.
Results: The results of this review will allow mapping the Rehabilitation Nurse’s interventions that contribute to reducing the family caregiver burden of the elderly with dementia.
Conclusion: It is fundamental to promote an environment of social well-being, physical and mental health of the family caregiver of an elderly person with dementia, in the home context, to reduce the burden and delay institutionalization.
