Taking Portugal and the period from 1993 to 2009 as its points of reference, this article analyses the relationship between economic deprivation and crimes against people and property that were recorded by the police authorities. The statistical regression analyses carried out included economic, demographic and social variables and the results obtained show that situations reflecting the economic juncture and greater deprivation are associated with a higher incidence of crime against people, though, on the other hand, a lower incidence of crime against property. The results obtained are discussed against the background of the theoretical corpus available and the methodological options adopted.Downloads
