This article looks at the new dynamics and rules that are currently / now in place in universities’ research activities. The framework of analysis supports the view that the various goals of academic research should be clearly defined in the light of European research and innovation policies. In order to better understand the nature and scope of the academic research policies in particular, the author looks / authors look in depth at the main European documents on policies regarding research/innovation and universities. Both the diversification of the objectives set out therein / revealed thereby, and the tensions in relation to the meaning / significance and purpose of research and innovation, are reflected in a growing argument about the articulation of academic research with social and economic demands / requirements.
