Digital activism in Portugal: An exploratory study

Abstract

Recent years have been fertile in new forms of collective mobilization and activism. In this context the digital media have been assuming a particularly important role. This article is based on an exploratory project, carried out between 2014 and 2015, which sought to study the use of digital media with the forms of activism and public participation of young people in Portugal. Methodologically this project took a qualitative approach, which sought to articulate a research online and off-line. The conclusions presented derive from an analysis of in-depth interviews carried out with activists belonging to different collective actors.

Doutorado em Antropologia. Bolseiro de pós-doutoramento no CICS.Nova. Co-editor da revista internacional Cadernos de Arte & Antropologia co-fundador e co-coordenador da Rede Luso-Brasileira de pesquisa em Artes e Intervenções Urbanas. É autor das obras Introdução à cultura Visual. Abordagens teóricas e metodológicas (Mundos Sociais, 2013), Porque pintamos a cidade? Uma abordagem etnográfica ao graffiti urbano (Fim de Século, 2010) e co-organizador dos livros Uma cidade de Imagens (Mundos Sociais, 2011), Popular & Visual Culture: Design, Circulation and Consumption (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2014)e Transglobal Sounds (Bloomsbury Academic Publishing, no prelo).

Inês Pereira, CIES-ISCTE (IUL)

Inês Pereira has a degree in sociology and a Masters in Communication, Culture and Information Technology (ISCTE-IUL). She finished her PhD in 2009 in urban anthropology, with a study focusing on the anti -globalization movement (ISCTE-IUL/URV) She is a researcher at CIES-IUL, where she has participated on several projects on youth,family, organizations and information tecnhologies. She is currently and invited Professor at ISCTE-IUL and at Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH-UNL).

José Alberto Simões, CICS.Nova (FCSH)

Doutorado em sociologia, Professor Auxiliar no Departamento de Sociologia da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH-UNL) e investigador no CICS.NOVA — Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais da FCSH-UNL. Tem investigado em vários projectos (nacionais e internacionais) nas áreas da sociologia da cultura, juventude e comunicação. Actualmente, coordena o projecto Activismo juvenil em rede: media digitais, movimentos sociais e cultura participativa entre jovens activistas (http://nyactivismproject.wix.com/nyactivism2014). Autor de vários artigos científicos e capítulos de livros sobre os anteriores temas, tendo também publicado ou co-editado quatro livros, de que se destaca Entre a Rua e Internet: um estudo sobre o hip-hop português(ICS, 2010).
