Abstract

Portuguese Radiology is going through interesting times. The concentration of ownership of private providers in a handful of groups has created business and management dynamics that are difficult to predict and anticipate. Fortunately, Radiologists have already realized that, although alone they have virtually no negotiating power nor strength, if they join efforts and willpower, they are still able to be heard and to influence the course of events.

However, it is important to refer that we should not let ourselves be deluded or discouraged when confronted with one or other initial victory. We must remain engaged and focused on defending our Specialty, not only from a monetary point of view but also in a competence and professional scope.

"Imaging" is a desirable area for many other Specialties and professional classes, but we must maintain our ambition and conviction of being the best qualified professionals to provide a complete and full response in this area. Firstly, due to our medical and clinical training and, secondly, because we have mastered the different imaging techniques and we are, therefore, capable of deciding, for each clinical doubt or question, which is the most appropriate method to clarify it.

But in order to reach this goal, it is essential to keep ourselves updated and here our Portuguese Society of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine can and must be an important partner.
