This article begins in a more theoretical vein, by first examining the dynamics of society in general, before going on to look at the social and family dynamics involved in planning for migration. We seek to demonstrate why these issues are of interest at a time when migration is becoming global in scale, and particularly in Portuguese society, which has long been the setting for various different international migrations, and especially for emigration.
