Medical professionalism, which for centuries was based on ethical and professional principles, which account for its liberal practice, is facing hitherto unknown challenges. These have arisen as a result of new scientific paradigms, the growth of the political and entrepreneurial cultures and, paradoxically, the growth of unscientific practices. The rapid increase in costs seems to threaten the traditional independence of the profession. For doctors to be able to assert their place in the society of their time, they must mark out a specific ethical base, affirm their professional values and make sure they engage with independent partners.
