An overview of the role of the universities

Abstract

The authors discuss the role of the universities within a wide context, putting into perspective university educational activities, as well as scientific and technological practice. The development of universities is analysed within the educational system and the context of science and technology, both in Portugal and in the OECD group of countries. Developments since the second world war in the perception of the social and economic relevance of universities are analysed. This leads on to a discussion of the current understanding of the university's role. Finally, the authors present general suggestions for public policies concerning education, science, and technology.
