This study aims to establish concretely how and why the first historic government presided over by the marquis of Loulé (1856-1859) fell. As Loulé, bound by the dual alliance with conservative avilism, resisted satisfying the anti-clerical demands of his own radical wing, they withdrew his parliamentary support and caused his downfall. In other words, the historic government died at the hands of its own parliamentary bench.
