Tocqueville observed that «the love of well-being» or «the passion for physical well-being» was the predominant taste in American democracy and the tendency was growing in Europe. But excessive preoccupation with material well-being could harm this well-being, because it could endanger the deferred gratification ethic that is the base of prosperity.
