This article evaluates the impact that the economic development of the latter half of the 19th century and the modernisation of the country as a result of fontismo (after Fontes Pereira de Melo) had on the living conditions of the Portuguese population. For this purpose one made particular use of two indicators: the expansion of the labour market and the development in the wage levels. The former because it allows one to evaluate the flexibility of the employment offer in relation to the growth in population and the sectorial crises; the latter because, together with the cost of living, it gives us the extent of the improvements that might have been felt by the workers between 1850 and 1913.
