Based on the point of view of the break with the nationalist historiographic tradition, which meant that the construction of the nation-states was considered a characteristic problem of the 19th century, the author gives an overview of the works and movements which, throughout the century, in various ways - monarchic or republican, federal or not - proposed the unification of the Iberian states and nations. He also tries to identify the reasons why these projects, often fired by important political and intellectual figures in Spain and Portugal were never put into practice.
