Abstract

First, the author frames the works produced in 19th century Portugal in the international context, and namely refers to the Portuguese participation at either European or American congresses. Then he focuses on the problematics of the socioprofessional classifications and their historical evolution in Portugal since the beginning of the 19th century. The classifications by Gomes Freire de Andrade and Marino Miguel Franzini are then analysed, as well as the social character of the former and the professional and economic character of the latter. The similarity between Franzini's classification, dated of 1848, and that internally approved 50 years later is emphasized.
