Abstract

Thoracic trauma is associated with significant morbidity, including impaired pulmonary function, postoperative chest pain, and restricted arm and shoulder movement. Serratus anterior plane block consists in the blockade of the lateral cutaneous branches of the thoracic intercostal nerves with consequent analgesia to the anterolateral chest wall. 80-year-old female patient with trauma of the right hemithorax with multiple rib fractures and a large hemothorax. Because of uncontrolled pain under intravenous analgesia we performed an ultrasound-guided serratus anterior plane block using 30ml of ropivacaine 0,375%. Patient reported significant pain relief. A thoracic drain was placed on the right hemithorax and the patient denied pain during or after the procedure with no need of extra analgesia. With this report we describe that serratus anterior plane block should be considered a suitable approach for placement of thoracic drainage as an effective option in pain control and better functional capacity.
