Anesthetic management of thyrotoxicosis in gestational trophoblastic disease - case report

Abstract

Gestational trophoblastic disease is associated with biochemical and clinical hyperthyroidism. Assessment of thyroid function in patients with this disease is important, as submitting patients in a hyperthyroid state to anesthetic techniques is associated with a higher rate of complications. Pre-operative optimization using β-blockers, anti-thyroid medication or steroids prior to induction of anesthesia is recommended. The anesthesiologist must be alert to the occurrence of this possibility, to better anticipate and manage this type of situation.

We report the intra and post-operative anesthetic management of unexpected thyrotoxicosis in the context of a patient requiring emergency molar evacuation.
