The first steps for the empowerment of Anesthesiology at Coimbra University Hospitals as independent department are dated from the year 1961. In 1972, Fernando de Oliveira (Chair of Surgery) is nominated as interim Director of Anesthesiology Department, and Anselmo Carvalhas (anesthesiologist) was elected deputy to the chair of the department, till October 11, 1977. The Department accomplishes the great scientific and technological developments in the following decades. In 1987, the transfer to the “New Hospital” is an essential step in the development of the Department (Pain, Emergency and Perioperative Medicine, Transplantation, Education, Biomedical Simulation Center).
