How to Build Privilege
The asymmetric distribution of tips in Portuguese casinos
Abstract
Contrary to what happens in most productive contexts, the most relevant remuneration for casinos workers in Portugal are the tips, not the salary. However, tips are not evenly distributed. Croupiers earn the majority of it. From here, a complex system of distribution of tips emerges that differentiates the various operational functions on a scale of internal privilege. In this way, the various professional categories existing in Portuguese casinos are in permanent confrontation, in a symbolic struggle for privilege and not against privilege. This article seeks to analyze the particularities of this social and cultural dynamics.
