Violence and Urban Insecurity: a Phenomenon in Growth or Transformation? The Case of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area

In this article, the relationship between urban violence and insecurity revealed in large metropolitan areas is discussed and analyzed in a necessarily succinct way, taking into account the main factors that seem to underlie this relationship. Taking as reference some available empirical data on the metropolitan area of Lisbon, the recent evolution of these two phenomena is also analyzed, as well as a set of prevention strategies that have been developed or that may be triggered in the near future to mitigate the insecurity that is revealed by a large number of urban actors.
