Tenure insecurity and incremental housing development in the peri-urban interface of Ibadan, Nigeria

Abstract

The increasing urbanization being experienced in countries of Africa exacerbates current housing needs and tenure insecurity. In Ibadan, Nigeria, the urban populace finds it easier to access land in the informal land market because of the strictness of the formal land market. This results in incremental housing development. Based on the self-help theory, the study examined the contribution of tenure insecurity to the development of incremental housing in peri-urban Ibadan. A cross-sectional research design and mixed methods were employed in the study. 248 household heads were selected from 6 LGAs of Ibadan and administered with a structured questionnaire. Ethical protocols were followed and informed consent was obtained. The study revealed that the majority of the incremental developers were illiterates. Factors that accounted for the incremental development included fear of eviction, high housing rent, and lack of funds. The study recommended enhancing access to secure land titles as it has multiplier-effects on housing.

Ayobami Popoola, SARChI Inclusive Cities - UKZN

Ayobami Abayomi Popoola is a trained Geographer and now an Urban and Regional Planner with lifelong interest on Human Wellbeing and Livelihood. His interest is how planning and plans shape human livelihood and wellbeing. This He displayed in His PhD research in the Department of Town and Regional Planning, UKZN where He studied Rural Physical Development and how it impacts household livelihood. This study explains rural household wellbeing from the tripod of rural governance, infrastructure and planning. He is presently a researcher with the SARChI Chair for Inclusive Cities at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He is the author of eleven Chapters in highly-rated books published by reputable international publishers and over eighteen peer-reviewed international and local journal articles. Most of these publications are in the area of rural, city, land-use planning, food security, climate change, environmental and sustainable planning and management, human livelihood and wellbeing. Dr Popoola is currently a part of the team in the SARChI Chair for Inclusive Cities project located in the Department of Town and Regional Planning, School of Built Environment and Development Studies, UKZN. The research chair is funded by NRF, South African Cities Network and others.
