UNSC Resolution 1325 and the Path towards Sustainable Peace

Resumo

Resolution 1325’s contribution to a more sustainable peace is now widely recognized, not only in post-conflict settings, but also in preventing violence, in various forms, in contexts of immanent or latent conflict. One of the most important factors for the Resolution’s success lies in its influence on civil society, but also in the impact that civil society itself has on the application and operationalization of this Resolution, revealing the gender perspective as essential and generating a dynamic of very fertile reciprocity for the possibility of peace. In the article, we will analyze the impelling action of civil society for the affirmation of women as central actors in peace processes - as well as in the political, social, economic and cultural reconstruction that follows. Through several examples and suggestions, we will see how this dynamic for sustainable peace was reinforced and expanded through the Sustainable Development Goals and the special place reserved there for women.

Mónica Dias, Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Instituto de Estudos Políticos (IEP)

Professora e Coordenadora do Programa de Doutoramento no Instituto de Estudos Políticos (IEP) da Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Doutorada em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais pelo IEP e desenvolve investigação nas áreas dos Estudos de Conflitos e da Paz, da Democracia, da Política Internacional Contemporânea e dos Direitos Humanos. Mestrado na área dos Estudos da Cultura pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Lecionou na Universidade de Colónia (RFA) e foi bolseira da United States Information Agency. Foi assessora da Comissão de Educação, Ciência e Cultura na Assembleia da República e formadora em seminários internacionais organizados pela Comissão Europeia e pelo Parlamento Europeu nas áreas da Educação Multicultural, Liderança e Gestão de Conflitos

Catarina Caria, Universidade Católica Portuguesa

Licenciada em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa e, atualmente, mestranda em Governance, Leadership and Democracy Studies na Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Prosseguirá os seus estudos na área da Resolução de Conflito/Peacebuilding e Agenda de Mulheres, Paz e Segurança na Universidade de Virgínia (EUA), ao abrigo de uma bolsa de investigação Fulbright/FLAD.
