Abstract

Introduction and objectives: Amblyopia is the main cause of monocular vision loss between 20 and 70 years old, being a recognized public health issue. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in its prevention. To assess data from the first year of analysis of Visual Health Screening in our hospital.

Material and Methods: This study included every child evaluated in the Pediatric Ophthalmology consult and submitted to cycloplegic retinoscopy between November 2017 and 15th of August 2018. Data analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics 25.

Results: From the 185 children included, glasses were prescribed in 74 cases (40%); of the remaining 111 children, 61 of them (33%) maintain medical appointments and only 50 (27%) were discharged from the hospital. The main reasons for prescribing glasses were mixed astigmatism (55,4%) and anisometropia (28,4%). There was a strong correlation between Plusoptix and cycloplegic retinoscopy for sphere, cylinder and spherical equivalent (r=0,78;0,81;0,81 respectively).

Conclusion: These results show the impact of visual screening on the detection of amblyogenic risk factors and they validate Plusoptix as a good screening instrument in this age.
