The Cure for Depression: Myth or Reality

Background: Major Depression Disorder is characterized by recurrent depressive episodes, from which total or partial remission will either pave the way to cure or to chronicity. Accordingly, the treatment goal is to achieve total symptomatic remission. In this article we will discuss the several factors that contribute to total remission and the role of agomelatine antidepressant in achieving full clinical remission.
Aims: The aim of this article is to demonstrate that Major Depression cure is possible if total remission of depressive episodes is achieved. We also discuss the comparative efficacy of agomelatine antidepressant in reaching total remission.
Methods: A critic systematic literature review was carried out regarding remission in depressive episodes and the role of agomelatine and its comparative efficacy.
Results/Conclusions: In Major Depressive Disorder symptomatic remission of the depressive episodes is a necessary condition to achieve a good outcome / cure. Regarding comparative efficacy, agomelatine has demonstrated to be one of the antidepressants that better achieves full symptomatic remission in the treatment of depressive episodes.
