Abstract

Background: The term folie à deux (FAD) was first used in 1877 by Lasègue and Falret. Subsequently, more comprehensive conceptualizations of the phenomenon of psychiatric contagion have emerged, such as Gralnick’s classification.

Aims: Presentation of a clinical case of a couple corresponding to a subtype of FAD called folie imposée.

Methods: Description of the clinical case and research in the MEDLINE database with the MeSH term: folie à deux, selecting the articles that best examined the evolution of the classification of this clinical entity.

Results and Conclusions: From its origins to integration into current diagnostic manuals, such as DSM 5, diagnostic criteria for FAD have become progressively more restricted.
