Abstract

Aims: The present study aimed to evaluate the presence of psychiatric disorders in patients admitted to a Neurology service and to what extent the psychiatric disorder may have been the cause of hospitalization. It was also intended to perceive the intervention of the neurologist on psychiatric disorders.

Methods: Retrospective study of patients admitted to the Neurology Service of the University Hospital Center of São João, E.P.E. in a seven-month period. Clinical data was extracted from clinical registries and discharge reports. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 21.0; IBM).

Results: We obtained a sample of 373 patients, mean age 52.64 years, 57% female. 37% of the sample had history of psychiatric disorders. The mean number of days of hospitalization was 11.7. A statistically significant relationship was found between the existence of a psychiatric history and duration of hospitalization. Functional disorders were responsible for 5.9% of hospitalizations. It was diagnosed a new psychiatric disorder in 11.3% of the patients.

Conclusions: Psychiatric disorders were responsible for at least 5.9% of the hospitalizations in the Neurology service. Psychiatric comorbidity may also influence length of stay. It is necessary to study larger samples to achieve a better understanding of how to make a more efficient differential diagnosis in the first contact with the patient, hence avoiding hospitalization.
