Abstract

The increase of the elderly population in Portugal, questions their level of quality of life, as well as the quality of the primary health care they are receiving in what concerns the diagnosis and the treatment of depression. This aspect is of extreme importance for the promotion of the Active Ageing, a concept that leads to the maintenance of motivation the social and the working life of the elderly, preserving their participation, dignity and self fulfilment. The role of the primary healthcare services in the diagnosis and treatment of depression is analysed and discussed.
