Abstract

Introduction: Developing communication in a professional context requires overcoming the simple conversation, aiming to analyse and to deepen the modes of intervention that take place in this field. Its application is focused on the user, but also between peers and multidisciplinary teams, in order to become functional and effective. The development of competencies in this area by nurses is essential because it facilitates changes at the individual and community level that positively influence their health.

Aims: With this article I intend to analyze communication as a process in the humanization of care and as an essential therapeutic instrument, with its specific characteristics. Additionally, a better understanding of the effects of therapeutic communication on interpersonal relationship in nursing care was the object of research and analysis.

Methods: Non-systematic review based on review articles published in nursing journals.

Results: The effective use of communication as a therapeutic strategy aims at obtaining therapeutic gains in nursing care. It facilitates the relationship with users and families, thereby promoting the development of coping strategies, contributing to a better quality of life and overall well-being.

Conclusions: Therapeutic communication as a professional tool allows the professional and health teams to understand the needs of the patient, often vulnerable to the disease and its limitations. The communication style that responds to a functional communication therefore entails attitudes, behaviors and qualities that must adapt to the diversity, ever- changing and complex contents, having to face often critical, urgent and emotionally charged situations. Despite these demands, we must not forget the humanization of caring between all the actors in order to foster constructive relationships that facilitate a harmonious and effective work at different levels of intervention.
