Abstract

The fertilization of fig trees is a technique carried out by many producers in Torres Novas, due to this fertilization they have both low production and low quality fruits.

The objective of this study was to evaluate production, growth and figs shedding by comparing the farmers’ traditional fertilization with the rational fertilization,  ie fertilization based on the expected production and the soil and leaf analysis of the previous year.

The results showed that rational fertilization had a major impact on the productivity  on the Preto de Torres Novas' cultivar . The figs were larger in diameter and dropped less.

In 'Pingo de Mel' cultivar, none of the different fertilization methods showed a different effect on productivity and growth in either years. There were no differences in the development of the number of figs harvested per branch in 2021. With rational fertilization, however, a decrease in fig drop was recorded in both years.

This study was carried out as part of the GoFigoProducão project funded by Programa de Desenvolvimento Rural 2014-2020, which aimed to improve the quality of fig orchards through the modernization of the techniques used and the efficient use of the soil.
