Abstract

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were recognized as the frontline professionals most vulnerable to burnout.

Objective: To identify work-related and personal factors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic that contributed to burnout among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses.

Methodology: A quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional, and analytical study was conducted. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was applied to a non-probability sample of 61 ICU nurses. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics.

Results: Nurses with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection, who care for more than 100 patients, and who witnessed COVID-19 patient deaths had higher overall burnout levels.

Conclusion: Providing care during the pandemic was associated with high levels of burnout, particularly among nurses who managed high patient loads, experienced patient deaths, and feared becoming infected.
