Introduction: More than a third of Portuguese nurses reported experiencing difficulties in accessing their parental rights, particularly flexibility in working hours.
Objective: To identify nurses’ difficulties in accessing their parental rights; to propose strategies that allow nurses to mitigate difficulties in accessing their parental rights.
Methodology: To redact this article, research was carried out on databases and current legislation. The definition of the problem was based on the results of the study conducted by Ordem dos Enfermeiros and observation in the contexts of clinical practice. The suggested intervention proposal was based on current legislation.
Results: The following proposals emerged from this work to resolve this situation: help nurses being aware of their rights, through continuous training or seeking support from Ordem dos Enfermeiros, and improving resources on institutions.
Conclusion: As professionals, who sometimes have their rights denied based on lack of personnel, it is essential to adopt a human resources management policy that focuses on the real needs of the population. It is also essential to educate nurses on labor law so they can demand their rights in an informed and conscious way.
