Boba Orchestra: a place of plural sounds

Abstract

This text examines the relationships and practices of the protagonists  of an orchestra that grew up on a council estate in Amadora. It explores the social contexts of inequality on the estate, and the project as a means of empowering the population in multiple dimensions of participation and citizenship. The author hypothesises that this inter-relational environment may generate fields of creative possibilities along the lines of the theory put forward by Gilberto Velho. At the same time, application of this ethnographical point of view to his exploration of the orchestra’s integration networks allows the author to problematize experiences with plurality, mediation and differentiation as possible means of convergence between aspirations and opportunities.

Ricardo Bento, FCSH-UNL/ ISCTE-IUL

Ricardo Bento é doutorando no Programa de Doutoramento em Estudos Urbanos da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH-UNL), e mestre em Sociologia pelo Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL). Apresentou a comunicação “Sociedade de metamorfose: as possibilidades de uma orquestra” no colóquio luso-brasileiro, Mundos em Mediação. Ao encontro da obra de Gilberto Velho, em 2013. Publicou nas Atas do VII Congresso Português de Sociologia, em 2012, o trabalho intitulado: “Sociedade de metamorfose: a criação de uma orquestra sinfónica num bairro da Amadora”. Além disso, é fotógrafo em diversos projetos de arte e media e licenciado em Filosofia pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH-UNL).
