The paper emphasises the contributions of sociology to the requalification of the labour market in Portugal over 50 years of democracy. The theoretical discussion problematises the dynamics of the institutionalisation of the profession, highlighting the multifaceted characteristics that guide training-profession relations. The research has a quantitative and qualitative orientation based on analysing 185 profiles published on the Sociologists’ Professional Portfolio website and 80 interviews with graduates in the field. The study shows the breadth of areas of work, the qualifications and recognition of these performances by employers. The analysis also highlights trends in the reconfiguration of the fields of work of successive generations of graduates.
