Experiences and strategies of women invested in a “man’s world”: the case of Portuguese local politics

Abstract

The article presents a research on the gender dynamics operating in a tokenism context: politics. Twenty-two Portuguese female politicians were interviewed. Their strategies to get a place in the masculine world of politics is mainly determined by the age: whereas the older women fight against gender discriminations and favor women’s skills, the younger value the superwoman profile that distance themselves from their socially dominated group, at the risk of denying the experienced discrimination, and are very attached to the meritocratic ideology threatened by the quotas.

Maria Helena Santos est psychologue sociale, postdoctorante boursière à l’Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL), Cis-IUL, et au Centre en Etudes Genre LIEGE (Université de Lausanne). Son activité scientifique a été développée autour d'études sur les inégalités entre les sexes en politique et les mesures d'action positive créées pour les combattre, en particulier les quotas et la Loi sur la parité.

Patricia Roux, Ancienne professeure en Etudes Genre à l’Université de Lausanne et co-rédactrice en chef de la revue Nouvelles Questions Féministes

Patricia Roux est sociologue, ancienne professeure en Etudes Genre à l’Université de Lausanne, Centre en Etudes Genre LIEGE, et co-rédactrice responsable de la revue Nouvelles Questions Féministes. Ses recherches portent sur les représentations sociales et les justifications des inégalités de genre, les résistances à l’égalité et à la domination masculine, l’imbrication du sexisme et du racisme, l’instrumentalisation du genre et ses effets discriminatoires à l’égard des femmes et des personnes migrantes.

Lígia Amâncio, Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL), Cis-IUL

Lígia Amâncio est psychologue sociale et professeur à l’ISCTE - Institut Universitaire de Lisbonne où elle dirige le Centre de recherche en psychologie (CIS-IUL). Son thème de recherche principal est celui des études genre, initié avec sa thèse de doctorat qui a donné lieu à son livre “Masculin et féminin. La construction sociale de la différence”, publié en 1994 (3ème édition, 2011). Elle a aussi édité le livre ”Apprendre à être homme. Construisant les masculinités” en 2004.  Dans le domaine des études genre, elle s’intéresse aussi aux processus de discrimination des femmes dans les professions masculines, en particulier la science.
