Abstract

This paper presents results of a research on the role families play in the control, management and governance of free schools during the academic years 2009-2010 and 2010-2011, in several schools in the county of Granada (Spain). Following a qualitative methodology, based on twelve personal in-depth interviews and eight discussion groups, the discourses allow to conclude that the families of students enrolled in Spanish free schools are more involved than before but there is still a long way to go. The paper also analyses the causes that, according to our data, may be producing this lack of effective family involvement in free school in Spain.
