Abstract

In this article we analyze the reading practices theoretically based on the conceptual framework that distinguishes reading culture from reading class, and empirically supported by the last sociological survey on reading practices conducted in Portugal. It focuses on reading on printed materials and reading for job or schooling demands, as well as for entertainment and information. The reading class is analyzed by the reading practices and socio-economic characteristics. We also discuss new lines of questioning and researching to understand reading in the digital age.
