Resumo

Sundarbans é o destino turístico natural mais extravagante localizado na Índia Oriental. A bela floresta de mangue oferece aos visitantes uma flora e fauna vibrantes. Um grande número de turistas visita Sundarbans todos os anos não só pela sua flora e fauna, mas também pela excelente mistura de recursos culturais e históricos. No entanto, a indústria do turismo não se desenvolveu correctamente devido à falta de uma classificação adequada dos produtos turísticos e de planeamento científico. O Sistema de Informação Geográfica pode ser uma das ferramentas mais úteis para o desenvolvimento do turismo em Sundarbans. Este capítulo apresenta o processo de desenvolvimento do circuito turístico nas Sundarbans. O capítulo também destaca o âmbito e a possibilidade de planeamento científico do turismo através da utilização do Sistema de Informação Geográfica. Um mapa interactivo de Sunderbans é preparado utilizando o software ArcGIS 10.0 para mostrar a arquitectura conceptual da gestão da informação turística através da utilização de um portal interactivo baseado em SIG.
